Born in Udine, Italy, Harry Bertoia emigrated with his family to the United States in 1930.
In 1936, he graduated from Cass Technical High School, Detroit, and trained on a scholarship for Cranbrook Academy of Arts from 1937 until 1993. He etablished the metalworking studio there and as a head of that department taught from 1939 to 1943.
Later, he worked with Charles and Ray Eames at Evans Products Company, where he developed techniques of moulding plywood. After the war, he worked for a short period at Charles and Ray Eames' Plyformed Products Company. His innovative wire chairs that he designed for Knoll Internation in 1951 were commercially so successful that he could make a living off the royalties and was able to dedicate his time solely to sculpturing.
