The Dutch artist Mondrian repeatedly lived and worked in Paris for longer periods of time. His topicless, elementary compositions originated from procession of symbolistic shiftings of meanings of colors and cubistic shape-splitting. Mondrian belonged to the circle of the avant-garde magazine "De Stijl", published by Theo van Doesburg from 1917-1931 in the Netherlands. Similar to the Bauhaus artists and the Russian constructionists, the authors of "De Stijl" were hoping for the clear design of all areas of modern life to have a healing effect on society.

Tamara Gorska was born a daughter of wealthy parents in Warsaw in 1898. In 1916, Tamara Gorska und Tadeusz Lempicki get married in the Knight-of-Malta-Chapel in Petrograd. Tamara und Tadeuz settled over to Paris seven years later. Tamara mainly received painting tuition from André Lhote, her aim making a living off selling her paintings. In 1928, Tamara and Tadeuz got divorced. In the same year, Tamata de Lempicka met Baron Raoul. Tamara kept on working despite the world depression and her work was exhibited in several galleries in Paris. Baron Kuffner proposed to Tamara and she accepted. In 1939, the couple settled over to Beverly Hills. After moving to New York in 1942 Tamara's style changed to abstraction and she started to work with the spatula.
